If you’re looking to stay active and meet other people then team sports are the way to go. You can play social sports like basketball, netball, volleyball, football, dodgeball and badminton. Whether you’re a complete beginner, have some experience playing games with friends or with work colleagues, or even played in a team at school or university or with a local club, you can find team sports at a level to suit you.

Which team sport are best for beginners?

If you’ve never played a team sport before, are a beginner, or even have some familiarity because you’ve watched some games and would like to try it out, you can find a beginners class where you can learn the basics, get a chance to practise some of the skills of the game, learn what the rules are, understand the different positions in the team, and enjoy playing some friendly games with other beginners. You can take up any team sport as a beginner, you just need to join a session or class that’s suitable for novice players and where there’s some coaching so you can learn to play and gradually build your fitness up. Once you understand the sport and feel comfortable playing in your position and are ready for more competitive games then you can join a social sports league, where you can play with a fixed team so you understand each other and can challenge other teams over a season.

In south-west London the main location is Wimbledon, which is easy to reach from the surrounding areas Putney, Southfields, Earlsfield, Wandsworth, Clapham, Balham, Tooting, Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon, Morden, Raynes Park, New Malden, Kingston, Roehampton, Fulham, Hammersmith, Earl’s Court. Also it’s easy to reach by tram from Mitcham and Croydon, and by rail from Kingston, Clapham Junction, Vauxhall, Waterloo.

In central London the main location is Pimlico, which is easy to reach from the surrounding areas Vauxhall, Battersea, Victoria, Sloane square, Clapham Junction, Clapham, Kensington, St James’s Park, Charing Cross, Westminster, Waterloo, Oval, Kennington, Stockwell. And it’s also easy to reach by tube from Brixton, Oxford Circus, Earl’s Court, Euston, King’s Cross, Camden, Islington and Finsbury Park.
